Simple Air Pressure Experiment

JUMPING PENNY EXPERIMENT

Materials: glass bottle with opening no larger than a penny, one penny, bowl of ice cold water.

Dip the penny and the threads of the bottle neck in the cold water. Put the penny over the opening of the bottle and wrap hands around the bottle until the penny jumps. The heat from your hands is transferred through conduction to the air in the bottle warming the air. This causes the air molecules to move faster which makes the penny jump.

BALLOON EXPANSION EXPERIMENT

Materials: saucepan filled with hot water, oven mitts or gloves, empty glass bottle (such as a ketchup bottle), rock or a weight to hold the bottle down, balloon

Put a balloon over the top of an empty ketchup bottle (you may need to put a rock in the bottom of the bottle for weight). Place the bottle in a saucepan of hot water. The balloon should expand because the air inside the bottle gains thermal energy and the molecules move around more, filling the space inside the balloon.

A LETTER TO MY "VIRTUAL STUDENTS" FROM YOUR "VIRTUAL TEACHER"

Dear Drew, Gabe, Rylee, and Tate,

I just wanted to say "thank you" for all of your sweet hugs, "thank you's", smiles, stories, and yummy treats! I have enjoyed each one of them! Matter of fact, Tate, it's because of you that I had a very "chocolatey-sweet lunch!" I actually gobbled both the cookie AND the donut in one sitting! (So much for the food pyramid today!) I'm saving the butterfly cookie to show to Sarah later, and I'm thinking that it will make a decadent morning snack with tomorrow's coffee! Well, I better get back to my chores: laundry, dishes, vacuum, find a dead insect to investigate its "sensilla"...

P.S. If I find a dead insect, I will try to remember to take an up-close photo of it and post it on our website. That whole "sensilla" thing is both intriguing AND gross to me! Ughh!

Have a great rest of the day!

Love,
Miss JoJo
